This self-assessment is designed to highlight areas where your policies and procedures are strong, as well as where they could use improvement. You should get ideas to make your handbook better, and a good sense of if an expert would be helpful to you.

After you have downloaded the worksheet, review each statement on the assessment tab and determine if your handbook does this well ("included"), does it not so well ("needs improvement"), or if it is missing ("not included").

Once you respond to the 45 different items, then click on the Scores for your results.

There are 4 possible results:

0-40 Beginner

Your employee handbook needs comprehensive work to make it equitable. Engaging with a DEI or HR expert to write a new handbook is highly recommended.

41-60 Learner

Your employee handbook has some elements of equity but has some major gaps. Engaging with a DEI or HR expert to update your existing handbook is recommended.

61-80 Intermediate

Your employee handbook has a lot of equity considerations included. There are opportunities to update your current handbook to help improve equity. You may benefit from support by a DEI or HR expert.

81-90 Advanced

Your employee handbook is highly equitable. You may have some opportunities for improvements, but you've done a great job for your organization, your employees, and your mission!

What should you do with this new information?

Make a commitment to improving where you can. Set goals and a timeline. Consider who can participate in crafting updates or giving feedback. And determine if bringing in new support would help you achieve your goals.
